Ransomware is a type of malicious software that encrypts your files and folders and blocks access to data until a ransom is paid.
The most common methods used by cybercriminals to spread ransomware:
· By EMAIL: Spam email campaigns that contain malicious links or attachments
· Security exploits in vulnerable software – EG Windows not being fully up to date
· Internet traffic redirects to malicious websites
1. A message appear on your screen stating your files have been encrypted or you may get an email with the same message
2. A ransom is demanded to be paid in bitcoin – the ransom can be anything from hundreds to thousands of euro
3. Once the ransom is paid the files should be decrypted and you can sure them again but this is not always the case

2. Make sure your windows updates are fully up to date
3. Make sure you have a good antivirus solution and that its fully up to date
4. Make sure you scan email for malicious emails before they hit your inbox
5. Use common sense when opening any email you don’t recognise
